Abstract

The specialty options in the University of Vermont' 2+2 Baccalaureate Medical Technology program prepare categoricalists in chemistry, hema-tology, and microbiology. Graduates of this university-based program are eligible to take Categoricalist certification examinations without additional clinical experience. These curricula offer courses and clinical rotations that provide more concentrated study in one area than can be accommodated in the generalist curriculum. Specialty graduates are proficient in routine and special methodologies and have experience in problem solving, troubleshooting, and clinical research. Clinical experiences are provided in university student laboratories and clinical affiliates. Graduates are successful in gaining employment in their specialty area. Those employed in their specialty rate their academic preparation as very good. Graduates of this type of program are eligible for ASCP Categorical certification under a new eligibility route. Other university-based medical technology programs, in conjunction with basic science departments, may adapt this curriculum for their students.
