Abstract

The present study investigated the effect of prior treatment, in vivo, with isoproterenol, norepinephrine or dopamine on ketamine-induced catatonia in the chick. The results of the study indicate that there is a relationship between the catecholamines, the pineal gland and the ketamine response. Pretreatment with the isoproterenol, norepinephrine, or dopamine augmented ketamine-induced catatonia, and pinealectomy abolished the augmented ketamine response following isoproterenol. These results lend further support to the theory that the pineal gland modulates the ketamine response.
