Abstract

Catchment liming is often a more efficient means of countering the chemical effects of surface water acidification than direct lake liming. However, such liming may cause considerable damage to upland terrestrial ecosystems. Upland wetland communities should not, therefore, be limed and all other proposals for liming should take into account all possible environmental consequences, not just those on the aquatic system, and should be undertaken in full consultation with relevant authorities.
