Abstract

AIM: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the evidence surrounding catastrophizing in the pain patient, its effects on patient experience and patient outcomes, and strategies to help minimize catastrophizing, reverse its maladaptive effects, and support more restorative patterns of thinking. METHODS: The current data on catastrophizing, maladaptive pain behaviors, the pain catastrophizing scale and treatment strategies was reviewed from a perspective of behavioral health and neuroscience both in adults and children RESULTS: Catastrophizing is a common behavior among pain patients.
