Abstract
This article traces the magnitude of impoverishment among the rural households of Assam resulting from catastrophic health payments. Cross sectional data shows the miserable conditions of rural households falling below the official poverty line after accounting for health expenses. The article reveals how the lack of a robust public health care system has a detrimental effect on the economic well-being of rural households. The article recommends financial risk protection and health subsidies specifically for the low-income households.
