Abstract

Since this book appeared in 2004, Mother Earth has been visited by a succession of disasters. The end of that year brought the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake of magnitude 9.2, centred below the Indian Ocean. The resultant Asian Tsunami resulted in an estimated 280,000 deaths. From August through October 2005 the deadly hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma battered Central and North America including the Caribbean, the Gulf Coast, the Southern States and Eastern seaboard of the US. New Orleans was evacuated, over a million people were displaced and estimates of damage exceed $75 billion for the US alone. Early in 2006, as this review is being written, Northern California is mopping up from extensive flooding of river valleys and nearby cities. Forest fires are burning in New Zealand, Oklahoma, Texas and Tibet.
