Abstract

The present investigation is aimed to study the effect of metal-loaded ZSM-5 (Si/Al = 40) zeolites in the final properties of a catalytically upgraded organic phase of pyrolysis bio-oil. Thus, several cations such as Mg, Ni, Cu, Ga and Sn have been tested. To evaluate its application as a potential liquid fuel, several properties such as pH, TAN, water content, viscosity, density, high heating value, oxygen content have been analyzed and a semi-quantitative analysis of the different compounds has been carried out by GC/MS chromatography. The results have pointed out a significant improvement of the liquid in terms of lower viscosity and oxygen content, higher high heating value, a decrease of the acidic compounds and an increase in the aromatic fraction. Among all the catalysts tested, Ni-ZSM-5 and Sn-ZSM-5 have demonstrated to be potential candidates in the catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis bio-oil.
