Abstract

This symposium follows the highly successful 2023 leadership plenary “Finding Joy in Your Career”, with a focus on getting into leadership.The demand for visionary leaders is more crucial than ever. Academia holds the potential to foster the next generation of geriatric psychiatry leaders through mentorship and groundbreaking research. Health care environments demand trailblazers who can champion patient-centered care, integrate technological advancements, and address the complex mental health needs of elderly patients. In the government landscape, visionary leaders can advocate for policy reforms, securing resources and support vital for enhancing geriatric mental health services across the nation.This symposium is a panel discussion consisting of geriatric psychiatrist leaders across these areas of medicine. The symposium will inspire and empower early and mid-career individuals to imagine, seek out, and excel at leadership opportunities in the field, where AAGP members can act as catalysts for change. The symposium is in keeping with the 2024’s theme, “Re-imagining geriatric mental health.”In a dialogue with the audience, our panelists will share their experiences, insights, and practical approaches to navigating the challenges and opportunities unique to each sector. Our panel will delve into strategies for bridging gaps, advancing research, and transforming care for our aging population.The symposium aims to equip attendees with valuable takeaways and strategies for honing their leadership skills, effectively driving change, and advocating for the advancement of geriatric psychiatry in all its dimensions. Attendees will gain a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of their pivotal role as leaders in shaping the future of geriatric mental health care.
