Abstract

In this review, the issues concerning the effectiveness of catalysis by carbenes and their transition metal complexes in a range of organic reactions are discussed as one of the developing areas in contemporary organic chemistry. Among the transformations catalyzed by carbenes, our attention was directed to the transesterification and benzoin condensation reactions that are potentially important for practical application. In the case of transformations catalyzed by the metal carbene complexes, we focused on the reduction of multiple bonds and the reductive dehalogenation of haloaromatic compounds that are important for organic synthesis and utilization of environmental toxicants.
