Abstract

Salt catalysis of the rate of addition of acetic acid to p-methoxystyrene in acetic acid solvent has been studied. Acidity and addition rate are increased by salt addition. A linear correlation exists between log k exp and H 0 (log k exp = −α H 0 + β), α depending on the salt species, α is characteristic of the proton transfer agent for a particular olefine, confirmed by the study of solvent isotope effect.
