Abstract
This is the first of a proposed series of catalogues of the type, figured and cited specimens in the museum's palaeontology collections. It is anticipated that one or two parts will be published each year until coverage is complete. The last section(s) to be published will contain an account of the history of the institution, together with biographies of collectors and others associated with the museum. Because of the delay in the publication of these sections it was thought that a brief outline of the history would be appropriate here.
