Abstract

The report that follows represents an attempt to present in the English language a concise summary of the vertebrates and stratigraphy of the continental Permian and Triassic red beds of Russia. This was undertaken in the belief that such information would prove of value to paleontologists and geologists who are engaged in studies of these periods but do not have access to the Russian literature, either because of linguistic difficulties or because publications are not, for the most part, widely circulated in this country. The summary is based almost entirely upon a of Localities of Permian and Triassic Terrestrial Vertebrates in the Territories of the U.S.S.R. by J. A. Efremov and B. P. Vjushkov.2 This report was published in 1955 and presents a summary of work of the last fifty years. The writer, upon request, was graciously given permission to undertake this summary in English by the senior author of the Catalogue. The full responsibility for the translation from which the report was prepared and for the selection of the information abstracted from the full report lies with the writer, for the summary was not seen prior to publication by the authors of the Catalogue.
