Abstract

This article presents the viewpoints and comments gathered in a larger survey on cataloging maintenance and authority control activities within the framework of the discovery system. Qualtrics (an online survey and analysis product) was used. Only one survey per academic library (275) was accepted for those that have adopted one of these commercial discovery systems: AquaBrowser, EBSCO Discovery Services, Encore, Primo, Summon, and WorldCat Local. One hundred seven surveys (39 percent response rate) were usable for data manipulation. Results indicated that there was no significant difference in the proportion of libraries that felt that discovery systems expose more errors with catalog data and those that believed that the data will be buried or diminished within the larger database of the discovery system. User viewpoints were divided into categories such as authority control, quality control, the OPAC vs. the discovery system, WorldCat Local, and staffing.
