Abstract

ABSTRACT Changes in protein, chlorophyll and α-amino nitrogen content, as well as in the activities of catalase, peroxidase and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase, were studied during petal development and senescence of flowers of Thevetia peruviana (Pers.) K. Schum. In the early phases of their development, petals contain high levels of chlorophyll, protein, catalase, peroxidase and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase activities. As petals become white (when completely open) all components decrease except α-amino nitrogen, of which considerable accumulation is noted. A similar decreasing trend in catalase, peroxidase and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase is noted towards the end of senescence of petals aging in attached flowers under natural conditions. This is also correlated with the changes in chlorophyll and protein. Petals of cut flowers of Thevetia peruviana exhibit decrease in chlorophyll, protein, catalase and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase activities and increase in α-amino nitrogen and pero...
