Abstract
A Space Shuttle launch is an overwhelming experience. As the engines ignite and the huge rocket gathers its energies to claw its way straight up, onlookers see towering clouds of exhaust fumes and a brilliant flare of light, and hear and feel an end-of-the-world, chest-thumping rumble that goes on and on. Watching this spectacle makes it clear that the space programme is about more than just the exploration of our celestial borders. It is humankind fighting against the shackles of gravity.
