Abstract

Following the subtraction procedure for manifolds with boundaries, wecalculate by variational methods, the Schwarzschild-de Sitter and thede Sitter space energy difference. By computing the one-loopapproximation for traceless and transverseless tensors we discover the existence of an unstablemode even for the non-degenerate case. This result seems to be inagreement with the sub-maximal black hole pair creation ofBousso-Hawking. The instability can be eliminated by theboundary reduction method. Implications on a foam-like space arediscussed.
