Abstract

Most pathologists, when asked, will admit that the most lasting lessons they have learnt have been from cases where there has been some sort of error. We remember the cases we got wrong and cases that turned out to be more complicated than initially thought. Errors or misdiagnosis in cytology and histopathology may arise from a number of factors. Whilst interpretative errors are a significant cause of misdiagnosis, other factors such as absent or misleading clinical history, confusing cytological features, spurious immunohistochemistry results and incorrect clinico-radiological correlation can also lead to an incorrect result. This workshop will demonstrate how each of these factors has lead to an incorrect diagnosis in a wide range of cases from differing areas of fine needle aspiration and exfoliative cytology. Awareness of these pitfalls is necessary to improve diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision making.
