Abstract

Cross-Site Scripting attack (XSS) is the foremost vulnerability identified in the world of the web today. XSS attacks permit an intruder to execute the malevolent code and tainted source on the user browser, which results in various effects like cookies stealing, password attack, hacking credit/debit card numbers or any PIV’s of consumers etc. A detailed analysis of the XSS exploitation along with its detection and protection scheme has been discussed in this paper. The case study concerns with the existing methodologies and approaches used to detect and mitigate XSS attacks and its vulnerabilities. It talks about both the client and server side detection methods with static and dynamic approaches which have been presented so far to detect the attack. Also, it includes the XSS Defense methods and tools used to protect the client as well as the server. The motive of this paper is to give an exclusive look over the extenuation of XSS attacks through various detecting and defending techniques.
