UK Vet Vol 15 No 5 September 2010 CATTLE PRACTICE The farm is a 200-cow dairy, calving predominantly in August-December, with a small spring-calving group. It is a Holstein herd, with an average yield of 9000 litres, on a maize-based TMR system, with summer grazing. The herd moved from a decrepit straw-yard unit, to a green-field site, with a sand cubicle housing system in May 2009. Prior to the move, the herd was milked in a portable milking system, while the new unit was being installed.
