Abstract
The emergence of antibiotic resistance necessitates exploration of novel therapeutic agents. Marine organisms, a vast reservoir of unique metabolites, hold immense potential in this regard. This chapter explores the successful integration of these metabolites into disease management protocols. While acknowledging the inherent challenges of marine drug discovery – acquiring and isolating marine organisms, characterizing bioactive compounds, and navigating lengthy development pipelines – the chapter highlights successful case studies. These case studies detail specific examples of marine metabolites incorporated into disease management strategies. Each case explores the source organism, the isolated metabolite, the targeted disease and its mechanism of action, clinical trial results, and the resulting improvement in patient outcomes.
