Abstract

Canker, or proliferative pododermatitis, of the equine digit is a difficult condition to treat and recurrence is a problem. This case report describes successful radical surgical resection of a severe case of canker. Surgery involved removal of part of the frog and caudal heel under general anaesthesia followed by regular dressing and wound care. The case was complicated by the presence of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, and this was concurrently treated medically. Although the area grew back in an abnormal shape the condition appeared to have resolved successfully.
