Abstract

In 1964, Raskin et al. described portal-systemic encephalopathy due to congenital intrahepatic shunts [1]. Only 20 or so cases of this rare disease have been reported [2,3], and only eight of these concern hepatic encephalopathy [1,4-8]. Medical treatment and surgery with medication have been used in these patients [1,3,5], but there is no report of shunt embolization without abdominal incision. We treated a patient with hepatic encephalopathy due to acquired intrahepatic shunts, complicated by hepatic cirrhosis.
