Abstract

Incest and its accompanying taboo have been much discussed since tribal times. Sigmund Freud, in Totem and Taboo, was one of the earliest theorists to discuss the psychological impact of the taboo and its violation. Our topic is father-daughter incest. There are pockets of people within our culture who would promote father-daughter incest as healthy for the daughter's sexual development; in Sweden, a sexual relationship between an adolescent over age 18 and her father is not considered “incestual” under the law but is considered legally to be sexual behavior between consenting adults. Our bias is that father-daughter incest is exploitative of the child; a well-thought-out presentation of this view can be found in Finkelhor (1).
