Abstract
PlusoptiX S09 (Plusoptix®GmbH,Nuremberg, Germany) is a binocular, port-able infrared video refractor which uses thedynamic photosciascopy method. As adigital photoscreener, it records digitalvideousinginfraredbeamsandanalysesdatain seconds using software installed on theminicomputer of the handpiece. At thebeginning of a measurement, the PlusoptiXcamera takes a few pictures to determinewhether the refractive error is outside meas-urement range. If it is, a ‘measurement outof range’ error message is shown on screen.In addition, the operator will find the words‘myopia’ or ‘hyperopia’ instead of refractivereadings in the output to indicate whichlimitation was exceeded. The measurementis aborted in this case and the screeningresult is ‘refer’. The method used to detectwhether the refractive error is outside themeasurement range is proprietary (RJJacobs, personal communication).Studies suggest that non-cycloplegicphotorefraction has reasonable sensitivityand specificity compared with cycloplegicretinoscopy.
