Abstract

Assisting people who experience chronic depression towards recovery can be complex. This article offers some insight into the theory and practice of cognitive behavioural analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP), a psychotherapy specifically designed to treat persistent depression. Clinical experience has highlighted that a course of CBASP provides more benefit when the patient understands the links and connections between what was learned in the past and how that learning manifests itself in the present. A core aspect of CBASP is collaborative working, and emphasis is placed on how best to nurture and maintain this healing relationship within the context of a system of theory and practice. We believe the practice of CBASP combined with a case formulation structure offers much support to mental health professionals and we hope they will find this approach helpful when trying to understand and treat the breadth and complexity working with the persistently depressed.
