Abstract

Abstract A 22-year-old woman in her first pregnancy presented at 24 weeks of gestation with acute shortness of breath, which had developed over the preceding 24 hours. She described chest tightness, but no associated palpitations, cough, fever, or coryzal symptoms. She had had no previous similar episodes. Past medical history was notable for allergic rhinitis and childhood eczema and asthma. She was taking antacids when required for heartburn and was not on any regular medication. She had no family history of significant illnesses and had never smoked. On examination she was wheezy and her peak flow rate was reduced compared to that expected for her age and height.
