Presentation of CaseA 48-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of chest pain, dysphagia, fever, and a subcarinal mass.The patient was in good health until six weeks earlier, when dysphagia developed while he was swallowing a piece of hard candy. During the next few days he experienced continual dysphagia and odynophagia on swallowing solids or liquids; his symptoms then diminished. Three weeks before entry he felt relatively well and was able to ski without difficulty.
