Abstract

As manager of the Education Program for the Australian Institute of Cartographers, the author has conducted a thorough survey of the state of cartographic and GIS education courses in all the Australian states and territories. This includes technical training as well as university education and details the recent closure of courses, the establishment of new ones, the current state of existing ones measured in student numbers, and the influence of geographical information technology on current courses. The essential elements of this survey form the basis of the paper from which conclusions can be drawn as to the future development of cartographic education in Australia in comparison to world trends. This is a revised version of an earlier paper which was given at the 27th International Geographical Congress, in Washington DC, USA, in August 1992, and the 1st Australian Conference on Mapping and Charting, in September 1992.
