Abstract

A truly optical balanced detection (OBD) with a single photoreceiver instead of two for suppressing excess noise is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed OBD not only rejects common noise, but also it enables the interferometer to operate as a double sideband suppressed carrier and at dark fringe so that quantum noise limited phase detection is possible.
