Abstract

This chapter discusses the law of carriage by sea. It covers charterparties (types of charterparties, the regime under which the goods are carried, remedies for breach of the contract duties, and deviation); carriage under a bill of lading (the nature of the contract and how it is made, the common law, the Hague Rules, the Hague–Visby Rules, the Hamburg Rules, the Rotterdam Rules, the present situation, and the global limitation of carrier's liability); the functions of the bill of lading and other documents; bill of lading for goods in a chartered ship; and freight.
