The object of this monograph in the words of the author is ‘to provide a description of the civil aspects of the carriage of goods by sea under Soviet law.’ He has eschewed a discussion of those aspects of carriage dependent on acts of state planning, since they ‘would not be very interesting for Western practising lawyers.’ and concentrated instead on forms of carriage with a purely contractual base, i.e. those involving an international dimension. The result is a comprehensive review of Soviet law presented in a style familiar and attractive to a common lawyer with legal principles clearly identified and illustrated by appropriate examples drawn from case law.
