Abstract

The objective of this study is to test the applicability of Mechanomyographic (MMG) sensors for the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) as well as for the follow-up of the post-surgical evolution. After reviewing the literature, three types of MMG sensors (force sensor, accelerometer and infrared) had been selected to compare with the Electromyographic (EMG) signal widely used in clinical evaluation. Three tests (two static and one dynamic) were then defined to evaluate thenar atrophy and thumb opposition strength as well as grip strength. This paper makes a description of the tests that had been carried out, starting from the procedure implemented for the application of the sensors and ending at the method used for sensor readout. Preliminary results obtained from a sample of twelve volunteers, which includes one with CTS surgery performed less than six months ago, are promising namely those from the measurement of thumb opposition strength.
