Abstract

Carotid duplex interpretation are based on velocity cutoffs and internal carotid artery (ICA)/common carotid artery (CCA) ratios. Patients undergoing left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation pose a challenge in the standard interpretive criteria. The continuous flow produced by an LVAD alters normal pulsatile physiologic blood flow, lowering systolic flow and increasing diastolic flow. Therefore, we hypothesized that presence of an LVAD alters the velocities observed on carotid artery duplex ultrasound, rendering traditional criteria difficult to interpret.
