Abstract

Carotid cavernous fistulae are an uncommon disorder, actually consisting of 2 disease processes. One category is a direct internal carotid artery to cavernous sinus fistula. A second category is the indirect or dural type carotid cavernous fistula. It is the purpose of this article to provide an overview of the anatomy of the cavernous sinus and to discuss the classification, clinical findings, diagnostic imaging evaluation, reasons for misdiagnosis, and treatment options.
