Abstract

Carolyn Matthews (Figure ​(Figure11) was born in Augsburg, Germany, on September 22, 1959. Because her family was in the military, she lived in several different places while growing up. She graduated from St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware, in May 1977, and was valedictorian with highest distinction. In June 1981, she graduated from Williams College magna cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Also in 1981, she received the Scholar Athlete Award for her high marks in class and for leadership on the college's rowing team. In May 1985, she graduated from the Medical College of Virginia (now called Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond, Virginia, and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. Her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology were also at the Medical College of Virginia from June 1985 to June 1989, and she was chief resident during her last year. From July 1, 1989, to June 30, 1991, she was a fellow in gynecologic oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Following the fellowship, she came to Dallas and Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC), and she has been here ever since.
