Abstract

1.1. The blood stream form (BSF) of Trypanosoma lewisi has demonstrable carnitine acetyltransferase (CAT) with a mean specific activity of 80 units/mg protein.2.2. An apparent Km of 4.6 × 10−3 M was determined using whole cell extract and dl-acetylcarnitine.3.3. The ratio of the mean specific activities of CAT, malic enzyme (ME), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and malic dehydrogenase (MDH) was 1 : 2 : 4: 12.4.4. Small amounts of pyruvate-U-14C, acetate-2-14C and malonate-1-14C were decarboxylated by 12-day organisms. dl-Carnitine inhibited the decarboxylation of each substrate.5.5. Malonate inhibited acetate-2-14C decarboxylation, and trans-aconitic acid had the same effect on the decarboxylation of malonate.
