Abstract

Much has been written already about the writers of the generation of 1898 and the two subsequent generations. Names such as Unamuno, Azorin, Pio Baroja, Valle Inclin, Ortega y Gasset, Perez de Ayala, Gabriel Mir6, G6mez de la Serna, Garcia Lorca, Ram6n Sender, etc., have achieved international fame, and their works-at least some of them-have been translated into most European languages. Even some of the most recent writers, those who began their literary careers after the Civil War, are beginning to achieve fame in the United States through fairly recent translations. Names such as Camilo Jos6 Cela, Arturo Barea, Jos6 Maria Gironella, Jos6 Suarez Carrefio, and Juan Goytisolo are coming to the fore because of the publicity that the English translations of their novels have received.
