Abstract

This chapter engages in a study of the different policies of the governments that Argentina has had since the rise of Peron to the presidency in 1946, and the main causes of such frequent change in governments and government policies. Conservative and military governments in Argentina have tried to closely follow the IMF conditions/prescriptions. One may legitimately criticize Menem's policies as attempting an unnecessary denationalization of the Argentine economy. Export subsidies may also reduce the need for currency devaluations and the danger of inflation that devaluations may bring about. All the four countries the people have just mentioned gave export subsidies to specific non-traditional exports beginning in the late 1970s. Moreover, the economic and developmental needs of the LDCs are different from those of the advanced industrial world.
