Abstract

Abstract Our work addresses the issue of representing and manipulating musical structures in a computer assisted composition environment called CARLA. We define a basic level language of typed terms for the representation of musical structures. Within this language, a composer can describe his/her own musical concepts. A set of musical actions is formalized, allowing a composer to manipulate musical structures previously defined. Such actions are done by way of a graphical Journal of New Music Research based on the formalized actions. Artificial intelligence techniques play a double role in CARLA. First, the system automatically provides new useful musical structures, derived from musical structures defined by the composer. Second, the system is able to induce other musical actions on the basis of examples of their behaviour.
