Abstract

This article considers the respiratory condition pleurisy. If left untreated, a number of complications may ensue. In order to provide high-quality, safe and effective care, the healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner must have an understanding of the respiratory system; an overview of its anatomy and physiology is presented. Also detailed are the potential causes of pleurisy, the signs and symptoms to be considered when making a diagnosis, and the care and treatment required. Finally, a glossary of terms is provided.
