Abstract

Vol. 45, No. 6 November/December 2005 www.japha.org Journal of the American Pharmacists Association 659 Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMATs) are teams of highly trained veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and pharmacists available to provide veterinary medical treatment and address animal and public health issues resulting from natural or manmade disasters. VMAT is supported by Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation.1 Currently, four VMATs operate in the United States, and each includes one pharmacist. As the pharmacist to VMAT-5,2 I was deployed on August 28, 2005, in anticipation of problems when Hurricane Katrina made landfall. My team spent time in Memphis and Dallas before being sent to Baton Rouge, where we spent the majority of our time tasked to the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La. This is a very large equine facility that served as a temporary shelter to the rescued and abandoned animals from the city of New Orleans and surrounding parishes following the hurricane and subsequent flooding.
