Abstract

The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand the perspectives on career success of female assistant and associate deans at a large research university on the east coast of the United States. To that end, the following research questions guided this study: 1. What does career success mean to female assistant and associate deans at Rinehart University? 2. What life circumstances most affect how female assistant and associate deans perceive career success? 3. How has the pursuit of career success changed over time for female assistant and associate deans? Data included two interviews each with eight participants, as well as observations, documents, and field notes. To analyze the data, the researcher used a strategy of inductive to deductive analysis and constant comparison. Participants all held the title of assistant or associate dean at the university and all identified as women. Findings show that career success for this population means aligning work with one's unique qualities and values; growing as a professional; having an impact; validation; and having a good life outside of the job. The life circumstances that most affect how female assistant and associate deans perceive career success are upbringing, motherhood, and family or partner support. The pursuit of career success changes over time for this population as early career success is establishing oneself in the workforce; mid-career success is focused on navigating both family demands and increased professional competence; and late career success is leaving a legacy. From these findings, three conclusions were produced. First, the pursuit of career success for these participants mapped to the beta career pattern of the kaleidoscope career model. Second, motherhood redirects how this population pursues career success. Third, career success for this group means the integration of numerous tangible and intangible elements that are unique to the individual.--Author's abstract
