Abstract

This paper tests the career stage model of cynicism among police chiefs developed by Crank, Regoli, and Culbertson (1986). Data were derived from questionnaire responses of 1120 police chiefs selected by a national survey using a stratified random sampling procedure. We used canonical factor regression to assess the Niederhoffer cynicism index for latent structure. We identified three latent dimensions of cynicism. A congruency analysis of the factor structure provided evidence for the stability of cynicism measures across research settings. When various theoretically salient variables were inserted as controls, however, the finding of Crank et al. (1986) was not supported, i.e., that cynicism is highest for police chiefs during the early years of their tenure and decreases gradually with experience. Instead we detected a curvilinear relationship between measures of police chiefs' cynicism and career stage.
