Abstract

So much has been said about the concept of career mobility and so little has been done to implement this concept that we are immediately faced with the simple questions: Is the idea of "career mobility" fiction or fact? Is it a philosophical fable or can it be translated into reality? In the brief time that I have, I would like to examine some of the needs for career mobility; some of the factors which might make it work: a few of the attempts already in operation; and finally, where do we go from here? This may sound more like the outline for a book than for a 20-minute speech, but it gives you an idea of the breadth of this much-discussed subject. The idea of "career ladder" has come into prominence at a time when health education and health professionals are attempting to answer the dilemma of the century:
