Abstract

This chapter examines recent developments in theory and research regarding career dynamics. We first discuss changes in the world of work, focusing on the turbulence of the contemporary economy and the resultant movement toward a more market-driven approach to managing human resources that has produced changes in the construal and enactment of careers. We then examine theory and research in five specific areas that are critical to understanding contemporary careers—career success, mentoring, career development, international careers, and entrepreneurial careers—and provide suggestions for future research in each area. Keywords: career; career success; mentoring; international careers; entrepreneurial careers
