Abstract

There are many stimulating and rewarding career paths in antenna design. In this article, I want to highlight the one I am most familiar with, make an argument for why you might consider it, too, and provide some opinionated but tested advice for how to be successful in the field. I was fortunate enough to build and lead Apple’s antenna design team during a period of eight years. Starting with the first iPhone, our team developed antennas for all Apple products, including phones, music players, tablets, computers, wireless base stations, and accessories. During my tenure, we shipped more than 100 unique designs in 1 billion-plus products. Therefore, I will be talking about antenna design for complex consumer products produced at scale. Specifically, I’ll be using mobile phone antenna design as an illustration of the challenges and reasons to get into the field. However, the concepts and lessons are equally applicable to other consumer devices in constrained form factors.
