Abstract

This paper proposes the system of a care training assistant robot (CaTARo) with 3D facial pain expression for improving the care skills in elderly care education. To ensure accurate and efficient elderly care training, this study focuses on the development of a care training assessment method based on fuzzy-logic for calculating the pain level for giving the feedback. Further, we developed the 3D facial avatar with pain expression of CaTARo based on UNBC-McMaster Pain Shoulder Archive and generated four pain groups with respect to pain level. The pain expression was represented in real-time by using a beam projector and a 3D facial mask during care training. Our results of the study confirmed the feasibility of care training robot with pain expression and concluded that proposed approach can potentially improve caregiving and nursing skills, after further research.
