Abstract

Care and caring have been debated in the nursing literature formore than 30 years as concepts of importance to nursing. Nursing theorists in this arena have drawn on the work of other disciplines, particularly psychology and philosophy. This paper reviews the literature and suggests Wittgenstein’s notion of family resemblance as a way for the profession to resolve the ongoing dilemmas over definition, description, and measurement. The notion of family resemblance allows the profession to accept that the meaning of a term is in its use and that the uses of care in nursing are many.
