Abstract

This paper reviews the status of mental retardation care and treatment in India. Particular emphasis is placed on recent expansion of physical care, and government and private sector attempts to educate persons to the necessity of having small families due to gross overcrowding. Also, the need to maintain a well balanced diet, obtain vaccinations against disease and receive proper medical supervision during pregnancy are stressed. A discussion of psychological tests currently in use and areas for future research in mental retardation in India are reviewed.
