Abstract

The objective of this research study is to determine whether patients with bradycardia or sinus node dysfunction are at increased risk of adverse events of pacemaker insertion when prescribed medications for dementia than similar patients with no symptoms of sinus node dysfunction. Analysis will include a comparison of available treatment options. The study is a retrospective review of medical records of Veterans treated in the VA medical system. Vital signs, diagnoses related to dementia and cardiac function, and outcomes will be extracted from computerized record systems and analyzed to determine the effect on the cardiovascular system of drugs for dementia in patients with pre-existing low heart rate of diagnosed sinus node dysfunction.
